Student Life

1. What public access for computing is available? Examples include computing labs, cyber cafés, residence hall computers, and wireless access.
The campus features a widespread wireless network that is free to all UC Davis affiliates. For coverage maps and connection information, visit wireless.ucdavis.edu.

The campus also offers 16 computer rooms for use throughout the campus. For more information about the computer rooms, including locations and equipment present, visit clm.ucdavis.edu/rooms.

Residence hall students have free Ethernet Internet connections through ResNet, the residence hall network. Each dorm also has a room with computers, printers, and scanners for student use. For information on ResNet, see resnet.ucdavis.edu/lrc/.

2. Does the campus provide institutional email accounts for all students and use email as an official medium of communication?
You will be given access to Geckomail, the campus email system. For more info on campus email, visit email.ucdavis.edu.

3. Does the campus provide and support electronic space for personal Web pages?
You can host Web sites, share files, and collaborate with other students and faculty with the new SmartSite software. For more on SmartSite’s capabilities, visit smartsite.ucdavis.edu.

Connecting with others

1. Is contact information for students, faculty, and staff readily accessible electronically?
Users can search the UC Davis People Directory by name, email address, or phone number at ucdavis.edu/search/search_people.html. Many campus departments also maintain their own Web pages, and staff and faculty contact information is usually located there.

2. What social activities and services are available online?
SmartSite allows you to form social networks, collaborate with classmates and chat with peers and faculty, among many other things. For more information on SmartSite, visit smartsite.ucdavis.edu.

3. Are there Web sites for student organizations and clubs?
To search for a campus club or organization or to learn how to establish one, visit the Student Programs & Activities Center Web site at spac.ucdavis.edu.

4. Does the campus make available online discussion forums or bulletin boards for un-moderated use?
SmartSite’s Chat Room and Message Center tools allow for student discussion online. Use them at smartsite.ucdavis.edu.

5. What technology-supported career-planning services are available?
The UC Davis Internship and Career Center (ICC) offers many online and on campus career-planning services for undergraduate students. Visit their Web site at icc.ucdavis.edu for more info.
