Services and Fees

What you pay for and what you get

1. What, if any, technology fee is charged by the campus? What does it cover?
UC Davis does not charge a technology fee. All technology related costs are covered by the university and not the students directly.

2. Will you be required to purchase your own computer?
UC Davis expects all students to own a computer with an internet connection, CD-ROM drive, and printer. Computers must be able to run a word processing program, spreadsheet program, email program, and Web browser. The minimum standards for computers are established at computerownership.ucdavis.edu/.

3. Does the campus make computing and network access financially accessible? Is a discount offered for computers and peripheral equipment?
Computer hardware, software, and accessories are available with an educational discount at the UC Davis Memorial Union Bookstore Computer Shop and at bookstore.ucdavis.edu/.

Financial aid for buying computers is available for qualifying applicants at financialaid.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate/students/computers.html.

All students can use campus computer labs for free.

4. Does the campus assess extra fees for network connections in residence hall rooms or for off-campus access?
Access to ResNet, the residence hall Internet connection, is included in the housing fees. There are no extra fees for network connections.

1. What hardware and software standards, if any, does the campus require, recommend, and/or support?
The hardware and software standards required by the campus are located at computerownership.ucdavis.edu/.

2. What kinds of services (help desk, training, trouble-shooting) are provided by the campus, and when are they available?
IT Express, the campus’ computing help desk, is available to assist you with tech support through phone, email, and walk-in. For contact info, including current hours of operation, visit itexpress.ucdavis.edu.

3. Does the campus have a plan for keeping its hardware and software current, and if so, what is the replacement cycle?
Most departments have a three year replacement cycle for computers. For more information on current hardware and software requirements, visit computerownership.ucdavis.edu/.

Other services

1. How does the campus support printing, and is there a charge for this service?
Printers are available in all 16 computer rooms across campus. You are allowed to print up to 90 free black and white sheets per academic quarter. Color printing is available at 1154 Meyer Hall for $1.50 a sheet. To learn more about printing on campus, visit clm.ucdavis.edu/rooms/printing/.

2. Does the campus provide wireless network coverage? If so, how much of the campus has wireless connectivity?
