Student tech wrap-up

Published in The Aggie on June 5, 2007

As the academic year comes to a close, here’s a look at some changes in campus technology happening this summer and fall.

Gmail pilot for students?

The campus is looking at contracting out some student e-mail services, and might test Google's service, Gmail Apps for Education, in a trial in the fall. Information and Educational Technology is consulting with various campus groups. Find updates at vpiet.ucdavis.edu/student.email.cfm.

Antivirus software swap; new Internet tools CD

The campus contract with Symantec AntiVirus expires July 24, so anyone who obtained Symantec through UC Davis should remove it by then. As a replacement, the campus has signed a contract for antivirus software with Sophos--it's free to campus users. Go to my.ucdavis.edu/software. Also, visit the IT Express Help Desk in Shields Library to get a copy of the free, new Internet tools CD, which includes the new software, plus Endnote and other updates.

SmartSite launches in autumn

This fall, the campus will transition to SmartSite, a new way to manage courses and work together online. It includes course-management tools that will eventually replace more limited tools in MyUCDavis. Students can use SmartSite to create sites for projects and groups.

Sign up for email forwarding

Before leaving campus, sign up for email forwarding services. To redirect your mail when your UC Davis email account is still active, visit emailforwarding.ucdavis.edu. To redirect when your account is inactive, send a request to ITHelp@ucdavis.edu with your full name, last four digits of your student ID number, UC Davis email address, forwarding email address and a phone number.

Vista and you

As the use of Windows' new operating system Vista spreads, the campus has advice for students buying a new PC: buy one with Vista Home Premium or better. However, students who own PCs without Vista don't need to upgrade their computers as long as they meet campus hardware specifications. See recommended requirements at computerownership.ucdavis.edu.

Moobilenet-X Pilot

IET has launched a pilot wireless network called "Moobilenet-X," using the 802.1x wireless protocol to provide encryption, enhanced authentication and improved performance. The network should be deployed early this summer. Read more at vpiet.ucdavis.edu/init_moobilenet.cfm.

Work together on a shared screen

Students can now collaborate on projects by using software that lets them share a big screen as they work together on their laptops. Use TeamSpot, free to users, in the Meyer Media Lab; reserve by calling 752-5215.
