Want To Find Your Dream Job? No Problem!

Posted on April 21, 2005

Ah, Spring Quartera sure sign that those lazy days of summer are just around the corner. But for some poor souls, summer means finding a job to fill up all that free time, and for others, it means graduationand facing the pressure of finding permanent employment. Fear not, faithful Aggie! Whether youre looking for a part-time job or your future career, UC Davis offers a wealth of Internet resources that will make finding the perfect job easier than putting together your class schedule.

Learn the ABCs (Aggies, Busses, and Coffee) with ASUCD
Do you secretly wish you could drive a big red bus? Do your friends come to you when their bikes need a quick tune-up? If so, and if youre looking for a part-time job, you might want to check out ASUCDs job listings. This comprehensive employment index covers ASUCD jobs such as working with The California Aggie, in the Coffeehouse, or for the Bike Barn.
To search the job listings, go to asucd.ucdavis.edu/jobs. The online search function also allows you to submit an application from home. Note, however, that there is no way to attach a spiffy and well-prepared rsum, though a rsum-friendly paper application is available at the 3rd floor Memorial Union ASUCD offices. And if you wish to apply for several positions, make sure you submit an application (paper or electronic) for each job youre interested in.

Student Employment: On- and Off-Campus Positions at Your Fingertips
Theres nothing like working on campus: flexible schedule, great atmosphere, and a five-minute walk from class to work. If youre looking to get out of the pizza business and into a more rsum-worthy line of work, check out jobs.ucdavis.edu. Managed by the Student Employment Office, the Web site lists positions available in departments all over campusperhaps a job is waiting for you in the department of your major! In addition to on-campus work, you can find listings for jobs available off-campus and in the cities surrounding Davis.
Jobs.ucdavis.edu has a lot of great features that make your search for the perfect job a little bit easier. To get a feel for which departments offer jobs you might be interested in, check out the Job Planner. This visual chart allows you to scan the various employers and positions typically represented on the site; for example, under IET you might see student writer or student graphic designer. If, on first glance, you dont find a job that interests you, you can sign up for JobMail. This service lets you select areas of interest and will send you an email whenever jobs in those fields are posted on the Web site.
Jobs.ucdavis.edu is especially helpful if you have been offered Work Study as part of your financial aid package. (Did you know that certain jobs are available only to students covered under Work Study?) To search for listings, simply select Work Study as your criteria. If you have any questions, such as such as whether you should accept Work Study if you currently have a job, browse the FAQ.
And for those times when a Web site is just too impersonal, stop by the Student Employment Office in Dutton Hall to speak to the staff; theyll be happy to help you!

Entering the Real World
Dont let the hunt for employment rain on your graduation parade. The Internship and Career Center (ICC) has everything you need to know to help you find a career after collegeincluding plenty of people just waiting to assist you. The ICC Web site (icc.ucdavis.edu) features a wealth of information:

  • Tips on subjects like job interview etiquette
  • A listing of ICC workshops (such as Rsum Writing 101) and job fairs
  • A review of dozens of job search engines, graded on an A - F scale: icc.ucdavis.edu/iccdocs/morejobs.htm. (Note: The appearance of these sites on the ICC list does not constitute an endorsement by IET or the University of California.)
  • Contact information for employment advisors in your area of interest
  • Listings of alternative job programs like the Peace Corps and the UC Center in Washington

But perhaps youd like to stay in Davis after you graduate. If so, why not seek employment at the university? Just visit the UC Davis Human Resources Web site at www.hr.ucdavis.edu to see available positions. Note that the Web site also features pertinent employment information, such as benefits, employment policies, and courses available to UC Davis staff members.

So while youre out catching some sun on the quad this quarter, take a moment to think about what summer means for you. Taking on a summer job can earn you some extra cash and burn some free timeand who knows, maybe youll fall in love with a big red bus. The opportunities are there; all you have to do is look.
