Online Before You Go to the Polls!
February 17, 2004
The California primary election
is March 2nd. Let the internet help you make informed decisions
and guide you through election-mania.
--Get info on how to vote. Visit the California Secretary
of State’s election website at myvotecounts.org
to view the official California voter registration guide and
candidate statements, and get all other general voting information,
including how to use those strange voting machines.
--Find out how to vote here in Davis even if you’re
registered elsewhere. You can use an absentee ballot (which
must be turned in by Feb 24) or you can vote by provisional
ballot at a polling place in Davis.
--Check out local elections info. If you’re voting in
Davis, visit yoloelections.org to find your polling place and
see a list of candidate filings (for positions such as county
supervisor, city councilmember, et cetera).
--Find out about all the political parties in California.
There are seven in all! Check out: easyvoter.org/california/howtovote/parties.html.
--Pick your President. On presidentmatch.com, you fill out
a questionnaire about your political leanings and are accordingly
matched with a presidential candidate who best aligns with your
views. Keep in mind that this website uses a simple formula
applied to the two majority party candidates only. Probably
not fool-proof, but it’s still an interesting site.
--Check out candidate profiles. With cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/,
see how each democratic candidate is doing with “delegate
scorecards,” and read through the “campus vibe”
section to learn about the political dynamic at other universities.
--Make a small contribution to your favorite candidate’s
campaign. Go to amazon.com
and click on the “Presidential Candidates” link
to make a contribution of $5-$200 to the candidate of your choice.
--Check candidates’ blogs. Follow candidates on their
personal journey down the presidential campaign trail. To name
a few popular ones: georgewbush.com/blog,
blog.johnkerry.com/,
blogforamerica.com,
blog.johnedwards2004.com.
--Don’t forget about ASUCD elections! Feb. 24-26. See
elections.ucdavis.edu.
