DIY Multimedia at UC Davis

You’re a closet artist right? You’re producing a genius film in your head, right? You’d be a rock star if you only had the expensive production equipment. Meyer Media Lab (located in 1154 Meyer Hall) features 12 Macintosh G4 Tower Workstations and five Dell Workstations with an array of do-it-yourself multimedia equipment.

Make a movie

  • Apple Final Cut Pro- this digital editing system is professional grade—many top filmmakers use it.
  • Apple Media 100-a consumer-use digital video editing program.
  • Apple iMovie-the simplest to use of the Meyer digital video editors, this program is perfect for the novice filmmaker.
  • Analog-to-digital converting stations-enable you to use the above systems to edit video shot with a standard (non-digital) video camera.
  • Apple iDVD-create your own DVDs.
  • VHS editing room-convert DVD to VHS.
  • 35 mm film recorder-burns images onto film.

Record and produce music

  • Check out the sound-dampened audio room, which includes Digital Performer 4 (an audio recording/editing program), a keyboard, mixer, monitor speakers, microphones and headphones for check-out, and a rack with a CD burner, digital audio tape machine, and an audiotape recorder/player
  • Apple Soundtrack-professional quality music production system

To ensure access to workstations with specialized equipment, call for an appointment at 752-5215. Computer Room Consultants are available to answer basic questions, and quick-start guides exist on most stations. In addition, instruction manuals and tutorials are available for some software.
