Be
Kind to Your Computer Labs
January 21, 2004
You love 'em, you use 'em all the time, and they're staffed
by stressed, tech-wise students just like you. The computer
room staff deals with hordes of cranky, sleep-deprived, overworked
students (not to mention the cranky, sleep-deprived, overworked
computers). We talked to these brave guardians of technology,
and here's some DO's and DON'T's for computer lab use they suggest:
DO use the computers as much as you need for
academic purposes.
DON'T cut in line or have a friend hold a computer
for you.
DO register all complaints or feedback about
the computer rooms by using the Web form available from the
computer.
DON'T eat or drink around the computers.
DO take advantage of the stand-up stations
(for quick use only).
DON'T misuse print-only stations to edit papers
or compose long emails.
DO conserve paper when printing. For example,
if you're printing something from the Web, be sure to select
the specific portion you want to print. Just be selective about
how much you print to begin with.
DO plan ahead. Don't pressure the lab staff
or other people in line to let you print out your paper first.
Just because your paper is due in 10 minutes doesn't mean you
can jump ahead in the printing queue.
DON'T leave unwanted print jobs in the paper
tray. (But you shouldn't print anything that you don't actually
want in the first place!)
DO turn off your cell phone in the lab.
DON'T play games or look at disruptive Web
sites (we'll let you use your judgment about what we mean by
"disruptive...").
DO treat the computers with care (don't lay
your wet umbrella on the keyboard, don't touch the screens,
don't remove security stickers, leave trash around, etc.)
DON'T download anything like AIM (or any other
software) onto the computers.
DO keep the space around you clear for others
(don't unload your stuff in the chair next to you).
DO ask the student staff for help. They know
a lot about the computers and the software loaded on them.
